About Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh is a historical city, well known as the Tea City of India. It is located 439 km (273 miles) east of Guwahati, the capital city of the Indian state of Assam. Dibrugarh is the emerging industrial hub of North East India due to the dominance of oil and natural gas, tea production, tourism, timber and fertilizer industries in and around Dibrugarh. Dibrugarh is well connected to the rest of India by rail, road and air transport, and as a result the city has emerged as a popular destination for business and leisure trips for tourists from rest of India and abroad. The city Master Plan area of Dibrugarh is 66.14 sq. kilometres and population is 186,214. The gigantic existence of the mighty Brahmaputra that flows beside the city and its many turbulent tributaries that flow with a gradual slope from the East of Arunachal hills to the west has made the soil of the district fertile and green. Some of the famous tourist spots are Jokai Botanical Garden cum Germplasm Center, Dibru– Saikhowa National Park, Jeypore Rainforest, Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuaries, Namphake Village (Buddhist Culture), Vaishnavite Monasteries, large lavish green tea gardens and shores on magnificent Brahmaputra.

Koli Aai Than: A sacred place dedicated to 'Ka Aai', the daughter of the head priest of the `Dibaru Satra'. Legend states that due to lack of a male heir, the Satra started declining. However, Koli Aai kept it alive by preaching its ideals and the principles to the masses. It is believed that Koli Ai was bestowed with divine powers and she vanished from the site one day, leaving behind a strong religious legacy in the minds of the people.

Medieval Memorial Grounds (Maidams): In and around Dibrugarh, there are number of memorial grounds raised during the regime of the Ahoms. Some of these Maidams are Barbarua Maidam, Bormechlow Maidam, Lekhai Chetia Maidam and Bahikhowa Maidam.

Dehing Satra: The ruins of this famous Satra from the times of King Rajeswar Singha, lie along the banks of Dehing River. During the famous Moamoria revolution, the Satra received royal support.

Lush green tea estates: Excursions can be organized to visit the sprawling lush green tea estates dotted with old world bungalows. During the visit one can the tea labourers plucking tea leaves, the factories and lifestyle of the tea estates.
