Planner Report in Brief

Introduction

The 5th convention of PLANNER (Promotion of Library Automation and Networking in North Eastern Region) was organized by the INFLIBNET (Information and Library Network) Centre, Ahmedabad in collaboration with the Gauhati University at Guwahati (Assam) during December 7 and 8, 2007. This is an annual event organized by INFLIBNET Center with the basic goal of promoting library automation and network in the North Eastern States of India. The 1st convention was held in Shillong in 2003 followed by 2nd in Imphal (2004), 3rd in Silchar (2005) and 4th in Aizawl (2006) At Guwahati, 274 delegates participated besides INFLIBNET officials, Guests, Students, members of the Organizing Committee and workers engaged by different subcommittees of the Organization Committee. Inaugural Session

The session was started with the Gauhati University Anthem performed by the Students of the DLISc, Gauhati University followed by felicitation of Guests.

Prof Mihir Kanti Choudhury, Vice Chancellor, Tezpur University who is the Chief Guest of the session inaugurates the programme by lightening the lamp.

In his welcome address, Prof Narendra Lahkar, Organizing Secretary of the Convention, while welcoming the delegates, invited guests and students, presents a brief note on the organization of the 5th convention of PLANNER 2007 at Guwahati. He has expressed his satisfaction for the enthusiasms of the professionals towards the convention by way of participating in a large number. Also, he expressed his thanks to the INFLIBNET Center for organizing this convention in collaboration with the Gauhati University at Gawahati.

Prof MK Choudhury, while speaking as the Chief Guest called upon the library professionals to be more proactive towards the academic needs of the community. Prof Choudhury highlighted the changing trends of academic environment and opined that in this context librarians have a big responsibility.

Dr Jagdish Arora, Director, INFLIBNET Center as Guest of honour discussed on various activities of the INFLIBNET center and to what extent the students, faculties and researchers of the country are benefited. He has expressed his satisfaction on the responses received in the Convention from the library professionals of the North East and also from outside North East.

Dr Ravindra Kumar Chadha, Joint Secretary and Librarian, Parliament Library discussed briefly on the theme of the convention “Libraries as a global information hub: perspectives and challenges”.

Speaking from the chair, Prof Amarjyoti Choudhury, Vice Chancellor, Gauhati University highlighted on the role of libraries and the librarians in the society in general and academic field in particular.

Mr HG Hosamoni from INFLIBNET Center at the end extends vote of thanks.
